With a two-games-to-none series lead with the ALCS heading to Detroit and Justin Verlander set to start game three, it only made sense for the online sportsbook bookies to adjust the Detroit Tigers’ World Series futures line down to +110.
After all, with Verlander set to bring the stuff that made him last year’s AL Cy Young award winner and the Yankees’ offense shooting blanks, it was only a matter of time before the Tigers pushed New York to the brink with potentially two chances to put the series away at home. Detroit did exactly that with a dominant performance from Verlander in a 2-1 win on Tuesday night, moving one step closer to capturing baseball’s ultimate prize.
Verlander’s latest outing is just another reason that the two teams competing in the NLCS this weekend should be wary of the Tigers. The 29-year old took a shutout in to the ninth inning, allowing just three hits before handing the ball over to Phil Coke to close out the game. Although Coke did allow a pair of singles with two outs, he managed to strike out Raul Ibanez for his second save in two games. Verlander allowed only a pair of singles and a leadoff home run by Eduardo Nunez in the ninth, and will now have the sports betting chance to rest for game one of the World Series. Meanwhile, it appears as though Detroit will move forward with Coke as the team’s closer, a smart choice considering Jose Valverde’s struggles this postseason.
While game three of the ALCS should provide a sample of what either the San Francisco Giants or the St. Louis Cardinals can expect in the World Series in terms of pitching, it also provided a small sample of how the Tigers can win online betting games without putting up big offensive numbers. Detroit managed just seven hits in the 2-1 win, but one of them was a solo home run by Delmon Young, and the other was an RBI double by Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera. That one-two punch of Cabrera and Prince Fielder in the heart of the Tigers’ order has been the most dangerous in baseball all season, and with Young, Austin Jackson, and players like Quinton Berry and Alex Avila all contributing, this offense is very dangerous. Cabrera has at least one hit in each of his 16 career League Championship Series games, and its scary to think of what he will do on the biggest stage of them all.
With the Giants and Cardinals set to finish off their NLCS this weekend, the Tigers will sit and wait for the chance to play the winner in the World Series. At +110 Betonline odds the number is still worth playing for Detroit to win it all, as this could very well be a team of destiny this season.
