2012 NCAA College Football – Week Three Preview

When venturing into the realm of sport betting online, you're going to find a lot of action among bookies in the realm of college football this weekend. Various 5dimes.com reviews have spent so much time in the offseason assessing the nation's 124 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, and many of them will lock horns in mid-September, as teams try to find a more solid identity.

A college football season, with just 12 games, is like online poker. Uncertainty defines the landscape right now, so it's important for teams to make progress in their development. Three games will test where six teams are at this point in time.

At 10 p.m. Eastern this Saturday, the Brigham Young Cougars and the Utah Utes will match wits. The Beehive State's bitter backyard brawl has consumed the emotions of fans, chiefly because of the distinct identities of the two schools. Brigham Young carries the banner for the Mormon community in Utah, while the University of Utah – located in the urban center of Salt Lake City – is more of a magnet for a liberated sensibility and mindset. This rivalry was always particularly intense because the two schools competed for conference championships in the Western Athletic Conference and then the Mountain West. However, when Utah moved to the Pac-12 last season and BYU became an independent, the calculus changed. Brigham Young needed to schedule nationally, while Utah had only three non-conference slots due to the nine-game schedule in the Pac-12.

The two programs have arrived at the conclusion that for a multitude of reasons, they must suspend their series in the near future, though they are likely to continue it before too long. This backdrop makes the 2012 tussle between the teams that much more compelling. BYU has a robust defense that should be able to slow down Utah's offense. The big question mark will surround BYU quarterback Riley Nelson. He looked very sharp in his team's home opener against Washington State on Aug. 30, but can he be as steady away from home? If he is, BYU should be able to win.

At 8:10 p.m. Eastern, Notre Dame visits Michigan State. The Spartans are in good position to win for a number of reasons. First, Notre Dame has not yet proven that it can throw the ball down the field with regularity. Everett Golson is a solid quarterback for the Fighting Irish, but that's mostly because of his ability to move around in the pocket and buy time. Golson is not a supremely accurate thrower, and he doesn't always make the right reads. Michigan State's pass rush is one of the best in the country, its front four a beastly collection of freakish athletes that should be able to outplay and outmaneuver Notre Dame's offensive line. If Michigan State can win that one battle, Notre Dame will be hard pressed to score a high number of points.

Finally, consider the late-night tilt at 10:35 p.m. between Houston and UCLA. Houston won its division last year in Conference USA, but the Cougars have imploded on both sides of the ball in their first two contests of 2012. UCLA, coming off a win over Nebraska, has to be feeling good about itself. The Bruins should cruise on their home field.
