Keeping A Close Eye on the MLB Wild Card Races

Every MLB team that is battling for a wild card berth knows that it could be a lot of effort just to play in one more game before the season ends. But if they win that game, then they become a part of the World Series betting futures and get their shot at a championship. There are some pretty good battles going on for the wild card berths in both the AL and the NL. This weekend’s slate of games will help to shed a little more light on a situation that has been heated all season long.

Saturday – Baltimore Orioles @ New York Yankees

The Baltimore Orioles were thrashed by the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park and that was not what Baltimore needed at this point in the season. The New York Yankees are only a game in the standings behind the Orioles and the Orioles stand in the way of New York and its AL wild card berth aspirations. The Orioles need to shuffle their starting pitching up a little after giving up 13 runs to the Red Sox in one game. The Yankees are having all kinds of problems with their starting pitching, including injuries and an ineffective C.C. Sabathia. Still, there is something about the New York Yankees and September that make it difficult to bet against New York in this game.

My Pick: New York Yankees

Saturday – St. Louis Cardinals @ Pittsburgh Pirates

The betting odds on which NL teams will win the two wild card berths have been heavily in favor of two NL Central teams for quite some time now. The only question is which two NL Central teams? The St. Louis Cardinals have wrestled the NL Central lead from the Pittsburgh Pirates and have a one and a half game cushion going into this important weekend series. The Pirates and Cardinals have been going back and forth with the NL Central lead since the All-Star break. It looked for a time like the Pirates may run away with the division, but St. Louis clawed its way back into first place. This game pits the red hot Lance Lynn of the Cardinals against the struggling A.J. Burnett of the Pirates. Unless Burnett has been working on some new pitches, this game will lean towards the Cardinals.

Pick: St. Louis Cardinals

Saturday – Tampa Bay Rays @ Oakland Athletics

The Tampa Bay Rays always seem to be involved in the AL East pennant race and this year is no exception. Lately it seems as though the Red Sox are pulling away in the pennant race, but that still leaves the Rays in charge of the wild card battle. The other AL wild card team is the Oakland Athletics, who are losing ground to the AL West leading Texas Rangers. Both the Rays and Athletics need this game, but Tampa’s pitching has been strong on the road lately and that should be the difference in this game.

My Pick: Tampa Bay Rays
