Bodemeister Looks To Bounce Back at Preakness Stakes

The stage is set for the 137th Preakness Stakes this Saturday from the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, with a familiar name once again listed as the favorite. Kentucky Derby runner up Bodemeister was considered the top horse at Churchill Downs, and came within seconds of winning the first leg of the Triple Crown before eventually conceding the lead and the win to I’ll Have Another down the final stretch. Fast-forward less than a full month later and Bodemeister is once again the early Betonline favorite, this time at the Preakness Stakes.

Known for its incredible speed burst, Bodemeister is listed at + 140 to win this race even despite its collapse in the Kentucky Derby because its skill set is better suited for this race. The Preakness Stakes is the shortest of the three races that make up the Triple Crown, which means that speed will be the biggest factor, and the fatigue that Bodemeister showed at Churchill Downs no longer as significant.

Right behind Bodemeister once again is I’ll Have Another, who will look to give sports betting online fans a reason to believe in a Triple Crown contender once again at + 400 odds. I’ll Have Another has now won three straight races including the Kentucky Derby, and there is no reason to believe that it will tail off in this race. While it may not have the same speed burst that Bodemeister has shown, he has enough to once again push for the win, and should at the least be a lock to show.

One other horse that has been given generous best betting odds is Went The Day Well, which finished fourth in the Derby. Went The Day Well is listed at +800 odds, and considering the history of upsets we have seen at the Preakness Stakes before, it wouldn’t exactly be a shocker if the little known horse came up with another big finish. I’ll Have Another and Bodemeister finished one-two at the Derby, and with third-place finisher Dullahan skipping this race, Went The Day Well is next in line.

One horse to keep an eye on in this race along with that top group of three is Creative Cause, which comes in at + 1000 odds after finishing fifth at the Derby. Creative Cause is among the most experienced horses in this field with nine career starts, and that fifth-place finish was the worst of his career, which makes it a prime candidate to bounce back. Hansen also struggled in the Kentucky Derby with a ninth-place finish after it was expected he would at least be in the running to show, and at +1200 he could have some value to show.

The per head list of contenders could be narrowed down to this select group of five, with an emphasis on Bodemeister and I’ll Have Another depending on the post position draw. While the NBA and NHL playoffs will dominated the sports spotlight for the majority of the weekend, the Preakness Stakes is an event worthy of the attention it is sure to get, as we look for another exciting finish in the second leg of the 2012 Triple Crown.
