The awards ceremony will be held on January 12 2009 at the opening of Zurich and the winner will be defined by the votes of coaches and captains of national teams playing under the orbit of FIFA.
Spain, champion of Europe, is the country that has more players in the race to get the award, with a total of six: Iker Casillas, Fernando Torres, David Villa, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas and winning the prize as the best footballer Euro 2008, Xavi Hernandez.
Apart from Messi, Latin America will be represented by his compatriot Sergio Agiero and the Brazilian Kaká, the last winner of the prize.
The 23 nomidados are complemented by Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo), Andrei Arshavin (Russia), Michael Ballack (Germany), Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Deco (Portugal), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast), Samuel Etoo (Cameroon), Steven Gerrard (England), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden), Frank Lampard (England), Franck Ribéry (France), John Terry (England) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (Netherlands).
The preselection was conducted by experts from the football committee of FIFA.

I can't see Messi taking the award for 2008 but if he stays healthy he should do it for 2009.
