The same sites that take the horse betting line wagers also keep track of the number of bets they take in on fights for the five-division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.. Next up for the champion is a bout against Canelo Alvarez, who may actually be among the few boxers that actually have a shot at challenging the undefeated Mayweather.
At 36-years old, it is truly amazing that Mayweather is still as dominant as he is now. The large favorite on any of the best sports betting websites to win nearly every fight that he participates in, Mayweather’s dominance has been well documented over the years. However, Alvarez provides a unique challenge in that he is still just 23-years old, which makes him much younger than the champion. Alvarez has an impressive career resume and while that may not mean much when you are comparing some of the fighters he has beaten to a champion that is as incredible as Mayweather, the bottom line is that there is potential here for an upset.
When it comes to finding the perfect opponent for Mayweather, the truth is that there might not be anybody better than Manny Pacquiao. However, as we have seen over the past couple of years, the chances of those two actually getting together and fighting one another are incredibly slim because of the fact that they can’t agree on the stipulations of their fight. That could mean that they truly don’t want to fight one another, and the reality is that Pacquiao has far too much to lose while Mayweather doesn’t have enough to gain. A championship fight against Pacquaio would be the best possible choice, but given the unlikelihood they will clash, there has to be an alternative.
The next best choice may be to pin Mayweather up against Amir Khan. Khan has been calling Mayweather out for some time now, and eventually it will just make sense of Mayweather to come right out and answer the challenge. A battle between these two would also reignite the rivalry between Mayweather’s team and Freddie Roach, and while it may not bring the same spotlight that a battle with Pacquiao would, it might be as close to that as it gets. Khan is talented enough that he should be able to hold his own against Mayweather, and the storylines surrounding a potential bout would make it worth the wait.
The anticipation of whom Mayweather will fight next has almost become better than the actual fights, and while that may change when he goes up against Alvarez, fans will always be wanting more. While Pacquiao is the ideal challenger, Khan is another solid option and it will be interesting to see how the champion and his handlers go about deciding who the next opponent will be following his upcoming bout with Alvarez and then going forward from that point on.
