Indianapolis Colts @ Washington Redskins – Saturday August 25, 2012 4:00PM EST
It did not take long for the NFL preseason schedule to bring together Indianapolis rookie quarterback Andrew Luck and Washington rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III. The sports betting experts do not expect to put a whole lot of stock into a preseason game, but the atmosphere for this game should be pretty exciting. The significance of this game is that it is the third preseason game for each team and that means that the starters will play for at least the first half. The Redskins fans have only had a quick look at RG3 to this point. By the time this game is over, Washington will really know what it has in its rookie quarterback.
The betting sites were impressed with Andrew Luck from his first pass in the NFL. That is because Luck's first NFL pass was a 63-yard touchdown reception. Granted, it did happen in the preseason. But the Colts' fans were expecting much worse from the team considering how it was dismantled over the summer. Owner Jim Irsay made plenty of room for Luck and a young team to go around his rookie phenom. The fans are already seeing glimmers of hope which is causing expectations to unfairly rise in Indy. Fans need to remember that it is going to take Luck and the Colts a couple of years to get on track. But, by the looks of things, once Luck gets on track, the ride should be interesting to watch.
Washington Redskins
The biggest difference between RG3's situation and Luck's situation is that RG3 is surrounded by veteran players. When calculating each team's chances for success in 2012, the bookies are not discounting the fact that the Redskins were a quarterback away from being a playoff contender last season. Now that the Redskins appear to have that quarterback in place, it is just a matter of giving him time to develop. If nothing else, this game should be a lot of fun to watch.
Indianapolis Colts
With the noted exception of veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne, the Indianapolis Colts are starting over on offense and defense. Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney have been moved to linebacker positions and the rest of the Colts offense is relatively new. A sportsbook review of the Colts' offense shows a young team that is looking to Andrew Luck for leadership. Because of the way Indianapolis has been bringing Luck along, he will probably not feel much pressure in this preseason game. That could make for some interesting plays from this potential offensive rookie of the year winner.
The Bottom Line
The Redskins and Colts are two teams with rookie quarterbacks, but they are not two teams in the same spot in their development. The Redskins will flash its offensive experience in this game while the Colts will struggle to establish itself at this very young point in its collective development.
