College Football Betting: Heisman Race is Typically Heavy on Quarterbacks

A sportsbooks review of the recent history of Heisman winners would show that the quarterback position is usually the way to go when you’re making your bets and this year’s list of favorites is no exception as four of the top five players listed to win college football’s biggest individual prize will line up under center in 2012.

Matt Barkley, USC (+325)

Barkley decided to come back to USC for his senior season and the Trojans are eligible for the postseason for the first time since his freshman year; it’s no coincidence that they’re going to be a popular pick among players that use price per head software when it comes to the BCS title. Barkley is being tipped for a big year and if he can lead the Trojans back to the top of the college football landscape, he’ll be a shoo-in for the Heisman.

Montee Ball, Wisconsin

Ball is the only non-quarterback on this list as the Wisconsin running back led the nation in rushing yards and touchdowns in 2011 and the Badgers are going to lean heavily on him to stay in the hunt in the Big Ten. Ball may not put up the numbers that he did last year, but he’ll need a huge season to break the quarterbacks’ hold on the Trophy; running backs USC’s Reggie Bush (in 2005 and that was later vacated) and Alabama’s Mark Ingram are the only non-quarterbacks since 1999 to take home the Heisman.

Landry Jones, Oklahoma

Jones was third in the nation in passing yards in 2011 and if he can stay healthy, the Sooners will win the Big 12 and that will keep them in the national-title conversation, which keeps Jones’ name n the headlines and Oklahoma atop the football betting list. It’ll be his first year without receiver Ryan Broyles, but Broyles got hurt last season and Jones still put up numbers, although he didn’t throw a touchdown over the final three games of the year.

Denard Robinson, Michigan

The Wolverines are back on top of the Big Ten(and the online betting sites) and even though their improved defense is the real reason, Robinson deserves all the credit he gets for leading the Wolverines back to a BCS bowl. He is still getting better as a passer, but Robinson’s real strength is in his scrambling ability, but he is also injury prone. Still, the Wolverines will let him loose in his senior year.

Geno Smith, West Virginia

Smith is a darkhorse candidate after finishing fourth in passing yards, but he served notice with a six-touchdown effort in an Orange Bowl win over Clemson to end last season. His Mountaineers have moved to the Big 12 this season and that conference has become more conducive to passing, so he could be one to watch at your betting websites.
