The online betting world puts a premium on the performance of quarterbacks in the NFL, and with good reason. As the Washington Redskins showed in the 2011 season, a good team with a bad quarterback is not going anywhere. The NFL has several elite quarterbacks that always feel as though they have something to prove. Let's look at a list of the elite quarterbacks that the online sportsbook experts feel need to step up in 2012.
Drew Brees – New Orleans Saints
Just when NFL fans thought that the Saints could not make things any harder on itself, the team decides to make quarterback Drew Brees' contract negotiation a long and drawn out process. If the contract is not done in time for training camp, then Brees will not report. The Saints are at a very low point right now and the signals that management is sending with this contract negotiation are making things worse. Without Brees, the Saints will not finish above .500. But even with Brees, the Saints are in so much chaos right now that a winning record would be a challenge.
Peyton Manning – Denver Broncos
If quarterback Andrew Luck does not turn out to be as good as the Indianapolis Colts and the pay per head sportsbook experts think he is, then the Denver Broncos just got the NFL free agent deal of the century. The Colts felt that a quarterback like Luck only comes along once in a generation. That is why Indy felt comfortable allowing one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time go to Denver. If Peyton Manning's neck can hold out, then he will turn the Denver Broncos into a contender.
Tom Brady – New England Patriots
The last two times that the New England Patriots have gone to the Super Bowl, it has lost the game. The three-time Super Bowl champs have a cloud hanging over its head that cannot go away until Brady wins just one more championship. But the problems that Brady will experience are not on the offensive side of the ball. The Patriots are still very weak on defense, and that weakness will cost New England another shot at a Super Bowl win. The frustrating thing for Brady is that he will probably play at his usual elite level all season and still miss out on the grand prize.
Ben Roethlisberger – Pittsburgh Steelers
The sportsbook reviews of the Steelers' offense for 2012 are not rosy. Just about the only offensive player anyone has faith in is quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. With wide receiver Mike Wallace holding out and running back Rashard Mendenhall on the verge of being a bust at running back, Big Ben will have to bring all of his talents to bear just to get the Steelers anywhere near the playoffs.
Eli Manning – New York Giants
Even with two Super Bowl wins to his credit, some people are still finding it difficult to call Eli Manning an elite quarterback. This is the season where Eli establishes his elite status and starts to build on his legacy.
