NHL Playoff Preview: A Capital Comeback in Washington

Online Betting Overview
When the New York Rangers entered its quarterfinal playoff round with the Ottawa Senators, most online betting sites expected the series to be over in four games.

When the Rangers' scoring punch was contained by a makeshift Ottawa defense and the series was pushed to seven games, people started to wonder how good the New York Rangers really were. In the opening game of its semifinal series with the surprising Washington Capitals, the Rangers had problems scoring but won the game anyways. However, New York's performance did not do a lot to calm the nerves of New York fans who are hoping for another Stanley Cup run. Click here to see the odds on the Rangers winning the Stanley Cup this season.

When the Boston Bruins finished the regular season, there were some observers who were questioning whether or not Boston could defend its Stanley Cup title successfully or not. The Bruins' offense did not seem as aggressive as it did last year and goalie Tim Thomas was not the wall in net that he was last season. In one of the bigger surprises of the NHL playoffs, the Washington Capitals knocked the Bruins out of the playoffs in the first round. It wasn't easy, but the Capitals showed new level of grit that it had not displayed in the past. Washington brought that grit to its semifinals series with the Rangers and it is going to eventually cause the tide to turn in the series.

New York Rangers
A sportsbooks review of the Rangers' play during the regular season shows a team that was hitting on all cylinders in every aspect of the game. Once the playoffs hit, the Rangers seemed to go into an offensive shell that it has not yet come out of. Despite bad calls by officials in the Ottawa series, New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist was able to stand strong in the New York net and give the Rangers the edge it needed. But if the Rangers want to continue to advance towards the Stanley Cup finals, then it will need to rediscover its scoring touch. It is a weakness that the Capitals are capable of exploiting and something that will cost the Rangers at least one game in this series.

Washington Capitals
Anyone who thinks that Capitals' rookie goaltender Braden Holtby is not qualified to go toe to toe in this series with Henrik Lundqvist should probably remember that Holtby just outplayed Stanley Cup champion goalie Tim Thomas in the first round of the playoffs. The problem that the Capitals have in the playoffs is the same problem it had in the regular season. The Capitals are unable to consistently score important goals. NHL fans in Washington were happy that the Capitals won its opening round, but everyone knows that Washington will need consistent scoring to continue deeper into the playoffs.

The Bottom Line
The Rangers will not be able to fend off the Capitals forever, and this game will be an extremely important one in this series. The Capitals will start getting to Lundqvist and it will be up to the Rangers' offense to come through and push the team into the next round of the playoffs.
