The league announced Tuesday that it will reduce more than 10% of the staff at its headquarters as a result of the crisis affecting the U.S. economy.
The commissioner Roger Goodell announced the reduction of staff in a memo to employees of the league. The NFL will eliminate about 150 jobs from its payroll of 1,100 people in New York, NFL Films in New Jersey and its production facilities for television and the internet in Los Angeles.
"These are difficult and painful," wrote Goodell. "But they are necessary in the current economic environment."
The NBA, Nascar and the company providing the Internet division of Major League Baseball also announced layoffs.
