The Red Sox begin life without slugger Manny Ramirez on Friday as they host the Oakland Athletics. Ramirez was traded in a three team blockbuster deal on Thursday that sent Ramirez to the Dodgers while bringing Jason Bay from Pittsburgh to Boston. Ramirez has been a key figure for the Red Sox since 2001, helping them win two World Series titles. Jason Bay will be counted on to replace Ramirez in the lineup and his numbers are similar to Manny’s. Bay has a .282 average with 22 homers, 64 RBIs and a .519 slugging percentage. Whether he can handle the pressure cooker of Boston as well as Ramirez did and also come up with key hits is another story. The Red Sox also sent reliever Craig Hansen and Triple-A outfielder Brandon Moss to the Pirates. SBG Global reports that early MLB betting has the public taking Red Sox at Home.

Tim Wakefield gets the start for Boston on Friday. He is 6-8 on the season but has a nice ERA of 3.94. He will be opposed by Oakland’s Justin Duchscherer who is 10-7 this season with a 2.37 ERA. Duchscherer did not pitch well in his last start, allowing eight runs on nine hits against the Rangers. He pitched excellent against Boston earlier this season when he allowed no runs and just one hit in eight innings.

Wakefield did not pitch well in his last start either. He gave up six runs and eight hits against the Yankees. The last time he pitched against Oakland he gave up eight runs and eight hits in five innings.
